KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) - You have to start somewhere.

This afternoon just a handful of people gathered at Victoria Park to protest Bill C- 51, as Harper's anti-terrorist legislation that's winding its way through the Senate before becoming law.

Opponents of Bill C-51 believe the legislation suppresses rights and freedoms and will make dissent of any kind more difficult.

The hope among organizers was to turn the event into a full-blown occupation. But not enough people showed up to make that a reality.

“The plan is still to have an ongoing protest and presence,” says Joe, one of the organizers of the event.

“But if we can't be here overnight and have a permanent camp set up at this time, it would be good to have at least a daily presence,” Joe adds.

“When you are out pamphletting and talking to people, even in your own circles, you get a lot of resistance. Sometimes it feels futile, but you can't give in,” he says.

At the time of posting it wasn't quite clear what will happen next. A facebook page was created to provide further updates.
