Almost overnight, the shocking image “the boy on the beach” became an emblem of the global refugee crisis, changing the way the world perceived the plight of refugees. The boy, Alan Kurdi, was Tima Kurdi’s nephew. The tragedy of his death and the photo that went viral compelled her to become a writer and spokesperson who has partnered with governments, businesses, and citizens worldwide to help raise awareness about the refugee crisis. Tima’s first novel The Boy on the Beach is a call to action, and an intimate and poignant memoir about the family of Alan Kurdi and the extraordinary journeys the Kurdis have taken, spanning countries and continents.

On Sunday, September 23rd, Tima will discuss her experience writing The Boy on the Beach and share her story. A Q&A and book signing will follow.

From 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., participants are invited to visit the exhibition Refuge Canada as preparation for Tima’s talk.
