Interfaith Vigil for Jose Figueroa

This vigil is for Jose Figueroa, a Salvadoran-Canadian father of three Canadian children. Jose came to Canada 17 years ago because of threats he faced in relation to his former involvement as a student leader with the FMLN. He was accepted into Canada on this basis, but now the government has decided to deport him as a terrorist threat, despite the fact that he has never taken up arms and has never broken any Canadian law. (see http://www.langleytimes.com/news/238002491.html and http://rabble.ca/columnists/2014/03/does-ottawa-believe-salvadoran-government-terrorist#.UyxrvSB75Tw.facebook).

Jose has been in sanctuary in Walnut Grove Lutheran Church in Langley, BC for almost 7 months, separated from his wife and children (who have been allowed to stay in Canada on compassionate grounds). On Monday, May 26th, Jose will have an appeal hearing in which his lawyer will argue that Jose should be allowed to stay in Canada. This vigil is intended to show support for Jose as he faces this appeal.

This event has two main aims: (1) to stand in prayerful solidarity with Jose Figueroa, his family, and other people facing unjust deportation from Canada; (2) to come together as a caring community of people who will be able to act on behalf of Jose Figueroa and others facing unjust deportation.
