Haligonians to Receive Training on How to Lobby for a Low Carbon World

With Joseph Robertson, author of Building a Green Economy

10:00am
- 2:00pm
Saturday February 8 2014

Address: 5500 Inglis Street

On Saturday, February 8, 2014, from 10 am until 2 pm, Joseph Robertson, author of Building a Green Economy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIQhBu2qqQY and Strategic Coordinator of Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL), will be in town training Haligonians on how to lobby effectively for a low carbon world. Cathy Orlando, National Manager for Canada’s Citizens Climate Lobby will Skype into the training session from Sudbury, Ontario to update CCL Halifax about all the great climate actions happening across Canada.

Using the proven strategies from the poverty reduction organization called Results, CCL has the real potential to achieve the political will to transition to a low-carbon civilization. CCL employs Gandhian Principles of truth and persistence in communicating the climate crisis and effective economic policies, chiefly to politicians but also in the mainstream media. There are 150 fully fledged Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) groups in North American covering over half the congressional districts in the USA and 41 ridings in Canada.

Halifax be proud! We started the first chapter of CCL on the East Coast of Canada. Halifax’s fledging chapter of CCL began in November 2011 with one member and we have grown to over a dozen members. Our Halifax’s chapter made it possible for CCL to start building an ongoing relationship with MP Megan Leslie, the NDP Environment Critic, in November 2011. Halifax CCL’s recent successes include significant interactions with five local MPs regarding the climate crisis and the solution, Carbon Fee and Dividend.

Carbon Fee and Dividend is an upstream tax and is levied at the well head, or mine where fossil fuels are produced or point of entry into our economy via imports. It is a non-partisan policy, created by citizens for citizens. Carbon Fee and Dividend is a market-based solution and that means the free market not Ottawa will choose the energy companies that will flourish in the 21stcentury. In comparison to regulation and cap and trade, Carbon Fee and Dividend will barely grow government size. By returning the revenue from carbon fees back to citizens, there will be minimal tax burden on Canadians.

The Canada’s CCL recently completed their first conference and lobbying days called THE TIME IS NOW - LE MOMENT EST VENU. In November 2013, 36 volunteers lobbied on Parliament Hill for Carbon Fee and Dividend and had 26 face-to-face meetings with MPs as well as meetings with advisors to Justin Trudeau and Elizabeth May. In Halifax, four additional in-person meetings with MPs took place in November. CCL’s two year plan is to pass a revenue-neutral carbon tax at the Federal level in Canada by December 2015.

CCL is a non-partisan organization. We are inviting citizens of all ages and backgrounds to join us. there will body breaks and a potluck lunch of local finger foods.
