Every Monday and Thursday evening until June 24th, The SPOT is hosting Sea Change, a creative program for Haligonians wanting to get inspired through art and music.
After one year in the making, creator Zoë Nudell from the Nova Scotia Sea School has teamed up with the Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation, Connections Halifax and Capital Health, to deliver a program that prioritizes people struggling with gambling issues and/or living with mental illness, but is open to anyone under 35 living in Halifax.
“It’s a program where we make art and music in a supportive group environment,” says Nudell, program co-ordinator and art facilitator for the program. Nudell, along with Connections Halifax staff, have been working with Sea Change participants since April when the program launched. If successful, it will continue for three years.
The program focuses on two streams, explains Nudell, one being art and the other music. People looking to enhance their creativity will have the opportunity to paint, draw, write, sculpt, make and record music, make videos, and put together display showcases for the public - and it all takes place at an accessible venue, The SPOT: 1221 Barrington Street.
Sea Change’s mandate is “to discover your creativity and experience how art making can enrich your life,” Nudell explains of the pilot project, “with skills, opportunities, friendships and eye-opening challenges.” Nudell has been involved with the Nova Scotia Sea School since 1995 and teaches Sea Change participants the same personal and educational values that are learnt on a Sea School sailing expedition.
Getting involved is easy. There are few credentials participants need to have. To explore your creativity with Sea Change, participants need to be ages 15 to 35 - no art or music experience is necessary. Although those with gambling issues and/or living with mental illness are encouraged to join, Sea Change welcomes everyone. Supplies are provided; all you need to bring is yourself.
