HMC has just received a “Notice to Grand Parade Protest Participants.”

The notice reads as follows:

While HRM has respected the participants’ right to peaceful assembly and their right to have their issues known publicly, it is now time to return the Grand Parade to the public at large for its use in the many activities of its citizens. These include, but are not limited to, the Nov. 9 Dignity Day Ceremony and the Nov. 11 Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Halifax Regional Municipality requests that all participants in the “Occupy Nova Scotia” protest vacate the Grand Parade to allow the resumption of its use by the general public and to ensure upcoming public events can proceed as scheduled.

Remembrance Day, as the largest annual ceremonial event in the HRM drawing more than 5,000 veterans, service personnel, and the members of the public, will require the use of the entire Grand Parade site. In addition, preparation for this important civic event will require sufficient lead time to clean and ready the site. As such, it will be necessary for the site to be cleared by Nov.6 at 5:00pm to begin preparation work. Attached is a copy of the site plan detailing the full use of the Grand Parade for the Remembrance Day event.

The Municipality is offering to make available to the Occupy Nova Scotia participants an alternate site on the Halifax Common, specifically the area of ball diamond 8, should the “Occupy Nova Scotia” wish to continue its peaceful protest.

The notice is signed M.R Labrecque, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer.

“This is the same technique that was used multiple times in Zuccoti Park [in New York City]...handing out eviction notices to all people assembled in the park.” Said one occupier, who wished to remain anonymous. “And each time the occupiers made a rallying call to all community supporters to come down to the park at the deadline time. Each time, that community support made it impossible for them to be evicted. And on multiple occasions the reason for the eviction was simply an excuse.”

Undoubtedly, tonight’s General Assembly will provide more clarity as to the occupiers’ next move.

It's the democratic institutions

I'm looking for a good place to share my opinion on what the Occupy movement should be fighting for. I'm putting it here!

I think everything the left is interested in seeing through pretty much depends on having improved democratic institutions. If we want to have better environmental considerations, more equality, fight crime bills and other things, they will only come about I think by giving more actual decision-making power to the grassroots - and that transfer of power can only happen by having better democratic institutions. Everything depends on having expanded democratic institutions!

So I think the main thing the Occupy movement should develop is a list of demands to expand political democracy within the setup that currently exists - recall legislation for politicians, the ability for citizens to petition for legally binding initiatives, binding referenda, a more democratic (or abolished) Senate, would be good things to fight for and start talking about in my opinion.

If improved democratic institutions are put in place due to public pressure from the Occupy movement then everything else that is being discussed could be more easily fought for and implemented.

It is something that should be talked about for sure!

Democracy?

Democracy - Tyranny of the majority.

Constitutional Republic - Protects the Minority from the majority.

My preference is Conscious Self Governance

UNGRIP – Documantary on Conscious Self Government

I also suggest you take a look into the history of public relations and how the human mind is caged by public schooling as well as the histories of human development, psycology, eugenics, prussian education, etc.

Thank goodness there are still some people that understand bloated government is one of the problems.

Prior to this, a number of folks were talking about a rotating occupation as a powerful form of protest, and well-suited to Halifax. While giving in to government tactics seems icky, and specific actions may seem too narrow, maintaining solidarity and directing efforts at specific institutions may be very effective. Occupy Dalhousie!

I don't believe the request

I don't believe the request to vacate the Grand Parade in Halifax is a tactic to suppress the movement. An alternative location has been offered. I think the Occupy NS folks can respectfully accommodate the needs of veterans, jews, and other members of OUR community to use the space for ceremonial purposes. The vets -- they are the ones responsible for our freedom to occupy anything. Let these guys have the space, the deserved attention and moments of remembrance without angst. These guys have endured worse than us and given more than they get back. They are a part of the 99 per cent -- clawed back pensions and overlooked medical issues. Please respect them, all. It is in everyone's best interests to show a sense of honour at this time.

yeah i', sure the veterans

yeah i', sure the veterans who actually did something for this country would just love sharing their ceremony with a bunch of filthy hippies who do nothing but camp like homeless people....
