The Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG) has come under attack by students who seek to have NSPIRG's funding put to a vote by the membership of the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) at an upcoming General Meeting on April 1.

In response, on March 30, NSPIRG held a press conference where students, faculty and community members voiced their support for the organization.

Many speakers highlighted the importance of the organization for those from marginalized communities on campus and in Halifax. "We have the right to have our voices and issues heard," says Marla Brown of the Black Students Law Association.

Here's why NSPIRG is useless...

You use the NS in the front of your name, yet you definitely don't represent all of Nova Scotia students. So please tell me why Dal students should be completely responsible for propping you up?

People speak of the debate and dissent argument, including MP Leslie. Well here's a note for all of you, I live on a campus without a PIRG and that happens anyways - except it's done without radicals.

For students who feel they have no representation, use your student union. That's what they're there for - not NSPIRG. These folks in your union are PAID BY YOU TO LISTEN TO YOU so use them! Why are you paying towards these executives and councilors and then to NSPIRG? It doesn't make any sense.

Let there be debate, and let there be democracy. But don't let a group of leftist-idealist-one track minded-hippies get the best of your campus.

NSPIRG operates from an anti-oppression framework which does not claim to represent any particular party, however people will politicize acts of social justice because of the cultural climate and the language available. NSPIRG deals with human rights; environmental rights. Does anyone accuse the UN or Amnesty International of being a bunch of left-wing radicals? NSPIRG utilizes a similar mandate that serves underrepresented populations through research & action.

also PIRGs exist all across North America, and are set up in a way that bridges university and community (NSPIRG was formerly Dal-PIRG but has since changed). They don't claim to speak for all (who can claim that?) but do provide physical and intellectual forum for voices that are often marginalized.

NSPIRG is also one of MANY student-levied societies. It is your preogative to OPT-OUT of you wish. CKDU, the Dal Gazette, Dal women's centre, etc. are all funded by students because STUDENTS ASKED FOR THOSE SPACES/SERVICES & AGREED TO SUPPORT THEM FINANCIALLY.
