**MEDIA ADVISORY**
K’JIPUKTUK (HALIFAX) June 22, 2015
Announcing: The Summer of the Khyber
What: Last summer we came together to save our beloved Khyber Building. The campaign brought together musicians, visual artists, theatre people, members of the queer community and Haligonians who are passionate about heritage and reviving our downtown core.
It was magical.
Right now, a group comprised of all of the above are working on a plan for a viable (and yes, still weird) arts and community hub located at 1588 Barrington Street. We will present this plan to Halifax Regional Council in October of 2015.
In preparation for this next council vote, Friends of the Khyber has officially declared the summer of 2015 to be “The Summer of the Khyber” #sotk2015
Several events and activities are planned for the Summer of the Khyber:
Display our new “FRIEND OF THE KHYBER: We support arts, culture, community and heritage at 1588 Barrington Street” poster in the window of your business or home. Take a picture and post it to #sotk2015 on Twitter and Facebook. (Print out the e-file or emailfriendsofthekhyber@gmail.com and we will bring one to your business or group!)
Buy an “I Met My Love Down at the Khyber” Joel Plaskett tour shirt (and post those pictures too!): http://newscotlandclothing.ca/products/joel-plaskett-new-scotland-khyber-tee-100-canadian-made?variant=2569490755
*All proceeds go to the Khyber Building Fund.
Show your Khyber Pride during the Halifax Pride Parade, July 25. Join us in front of the Khyber Building to watch the Parade and show our support for this historic queer site. All Khyber lovers (LGBTQIA+ and allies), especially anyone with a connection to the Turret, welcome. *Meet-up time TBA. Get in touch if you’d like to march in the Parade and hand out Khyber swag.
Rock out with the Joel Plaskett Emergency in support of the Khyber Building Fund, September 4 at the Shore Club in Hubbards! Tickets $30.00. Doors 9PM, show 10PM. *Tickets on sale this week. Go to http://joelplaskett.com/ for more info.
When: June thru September, 2015
Who: Friends of the Khyber is a collection of individuals who are organizing to champion and defend the rich history and significance of 1588 Barrington Street. We believe that Halifax deserves a cultural and creative hub in a well-maintained, accessible, publicly-owned Khyber Building.
