Maritime Anarchists and Dalhousie Feminists Call Demonstration to Shut Down Daniel Tosh

 

On the heels of the Dalhousie Dentistry Gentlemen’s Club scandal, the misogynist, transphobic “comedian” Daniel Tosh is scheduled to perform at the Dalhousie Arts Centre this June. Maritime Anarchist Initiative and allied Dalhousie feminists are calling for a demonstration on Dal campus on Thursday, June 4th

 

Tosh’s “comedy” has been widely criticized as transphobic and misogynist. In fact his sense of humour is very similar to that of the DDS Gentleman’s Club: he is notorious for telling rape jokes. In one particularly controversial incident, he waxed poetic about the virtues of rape jokes, and when a woman in the audience objected, he suggested that it would be incredibly hilarious if the men in the audience were to gang rape her on the spot.

 

In another incident, he quipped about a transgender model “If you  have sex with her, you'd be gay because that dude has a dick!” – a textbook example of anti-trans bigotry and a sentiment that causes a great deal of violence against trans women.

 

”Despite their lip service throughout the last year, Dalhousie is playing host to a comedian who exemplifies some of the most violently regressive and ignorant aspects of contemporary culture. It seems that whether they are being told through social media, or from the stage of an auditorium, Dalhousie has no problem with rape jokes and rape threats.”

 

Said a Dalhousie student involved in planning the demonstration, who wished to remain anonymous.“This is completely unacceptable. Unlike Dalhousie, we’re committed to fighting misogyny, rape culture, and transphobia on campus and everywhere else. We invite everyone who cares about the safety of women and trans people to join us in the streets.” – said Storm Paradise of the Maritime Anarchist Initiative.
