Halifax - The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is hosting a free public Living Shorelines site selection tour around Halifax Harbour on Saturday July 19th. The tour is a key piece of a project, funded by the Intact Foundation and University of Waterloo’s Climate Change Adaptation Project, which aims to establish a public Living Shorelines demonstration site in the Halifax area.
“Living Shorelines is an approach applied successfully in other coastal jurisdictions. It maintains the natural shoreline processes that build up beaches and wetlands, while helping to reduce property loss due to erosion” says Emily LeGrand, Restoration Educator at the Ecology Action Centre. The EAC wants to encourage a shift away from rock walls and boulders, which can disrupt habitat and increase erosion elsewhere on the coast, and towards Living Shorelines approaches. “Living Shorelines is about changing our relationship with the coast. This includes re-thinking where we build, and how we try to protect our property. Some erosion is inevitable and necessary for healthy coastlines, and actually helps a coastline adapt to effects of climate change such as sea level rise,” says Jennifer Graham, Coastal Coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre.
The tour will begin on the Northwest Arm in Halifax at 8:30am, and finish at in Eastern Passage at 1pm. Attendees will hear from a variety of local coastal experts, and learn what to consider in evaluating a site’s Living Shoreline suitability. The final site will be chosen by the end of the day.
