by Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia
June 10 - Hundreds of non-profit staff & volunteers in Nova Scotia will meet June 16-17 for a conference inDartmouth exploring the contributions made by non-profit groups, as well as the challenges facing the sector.
Panel discussions, keynote speakers and workshops at A Different Kind of Profit: Social Impact of the Non-Profit Sector will cover topics ranging from social enterprise, impact evaluation, diversifying the sector, and how nonprofits contribute to Nova Scotia’s new economy.
The recent Nova Scotia Commission on Building Our New Economy calls for a co-operative effort to createmeaningful employment in all corners of our province. And there is much talk these days of business start-ups and modernizing traditional industries. “But while we hear a lot about the business and government sectors, there’s a third sector that employs 5% of Nova Scotia’s workforce – the non-profit sector,” says Kathleen Flanagan, Executive Director of the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia. “Non-profit organizations in Nova Scotia employ around 24,000 people.”
Non-profits also contribute to the healthy and welcoming society needed to attract businesses and immigrants, and to retain younger workers.
Panel discussions and presentations will be web-streamed. Speakers at the conference include:
Rankin MacSween, New Dawn Enterprises
Susanna Fuller, One NS Commission
Pam Mood, Mayor of Yarmouth
Roger Hunka, Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council
Mike Little, Community Carrot Co-op
David Upton, Common Good Solutions
