Young workers talk about union building under capitalism
by Public Service Alliance of Canada - Atlantic
HALIFAX, NS – A group of progressive community organizations are holding a public panel Saturday evening entitled Unions. Young Workers. Capitalism. The panel features Nora Loreto, a Québec-based activist and the author of the recently published From Demonized to Organized: Building the New Union Movement.
Nora will be joined by Canadian Federation of Students National Representative Nick Stark and Charlie Huntley, a member of Solidarity Halifax and Baristas Rise Up. Kyle Buott, President of the Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council will moderate.
While unions are arguably the only remaining democratic institutions under capitalism, the panel will examine whether they are rising to the challenges presented by neo-liberal policies.
Especially when it comes to young workers. Faced with an increased casualization of work and chronic unemployment, young workers have less and less access to unions and to unionized workplaces. The panel will explore how we can build a union movement that truly includes the struggles of young workers?
