Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities supports creation of a Coastal Zone Act and a moratorium on fracking

Municipalities Leading the Way

by Ecology Action Centre

Halifax - On Thursday, November 7th during their Fall Conference, the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM) passed a resolution asking the province to create a Nova Scotia Coastal Zone Act. Furthermore, the municipalities also passed a resolution calling for an extended moratorium on fracking pending a comprehensive review of the controversial practice.

The Ecology Action Centre is pleased with the results . “Evidently,  Nova Scotia mayors and councillors share our passion for water”, says Jennifer Graham, Coastal Coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre.  “We look forward to working closely with municipalities, the province, and citizens to support implementation of these two important resolutions.”

Jennifer West, Geoscience Coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre was present for the votes and celebrated the resolutions with many councillors and mayors.  “Ultimately, creating a Coastal Zone Act and banning fracking in N S are about keeping communities safe and our water healthy. Who doesn’t want that for their children and grandchildren?” asks West.

“Municipalities are showing real leadership when it comes to the environment,” says Mark Butler, Policy Director. “We look forward to our new provincial government following the municipalities’ lead and protecting our coasts from bad development and our freshwater from fracking.”
