With an election less than a month away, the Halifax Media Co-op is interested in stories that matter to our readers.
And we need your help.
We are looking for writers who are willing to write about the issues that are too often neglected by other media outlets.
Stories from the perspective of marginalized communities in Nova Scotia, about people with disabilities, immigrants and refugees, Black communities, First Nations communities, LGBTQ people, and those living in poverty. You get the idea.
We want to hear about these issues, and at this time especially we want to understand where the political parties stand, and why that matters on election day.
We pay either $40 for what we call a mini pitch, or $100 for a more substantial story.
Mini pitches are for shorter stories, up to 800 words, on relatively straightforward topics. Say you attend a political debate or a rally and now you want to report on it. These stories need not be written, audio or video with just a short introductory text are also welcome.
The $100 pitches are for stories that frequently are a bit longer, 1200 words or so, and that are more complex. These stories typically require more extensive research, you need to interview a variety of sources, etc.
If you think you can write such a story we want to hear from you.
Send us a quick note, less than 200 words, outlining the topic and angle you will cover, who you will interview, what sources you will consult. A one-line bio of yourself, and a link to previous work (if applicable) is also helpful.
Writers do not necessarily need previous journalism experience but should be familiar with the Halifax Media Co-op's work and have read over the contributor guidelines. You should be prepared for a rigorous editing process.
We also expect you to submit one or more photographs to accompany the story.
Spin doctors unconditionally devoted to any one political party need not apply.
No deadline for pitches or submissions, apart from the obvious one of election day, October 8.
