Press release from New Brunswick chiefs regarding shale gas development

by Assembly of First Nations New Brunswick Chiefs Inc.

The Assembly of First Nations’ Chiefs in New Brunswick declares its strong commitment to the well-being of Mi’gmag and Wolastoqiyik children and families throughout this province. The depth of poverty of our First Nations’ members must end. And it must end now. We have been working tirelessly to alleviate the terrible living conditions First Nations’ people face every single day. We will protect our rights and the environment as we move ahead but we must help our people immediately. We cannot agree with those who want our people to remain in poverty, or those from outside our communities who do not have to live with the consequences of their rhetoric.

This is our land. The resources are ours. We will work with government and industries who care for the environment and who will develop those resources responsibly with us. We will share fully in the benefits those resources provide.

We will not work with irresponsible companies and governments.

Government and industry must come forward now and sit down with us to find sensible and acceptable solutions to these immense problems. If the Mi'gmaq and the Wolastoqiyik do not benefit we will use all legal means to prevent resource development.
