Halifax Media Co-op Journalist Reports on Emera Controversies from the Bahamas
by Editor
On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the privatization of power generation, Halifax Media Co-op editor Miles Howe is travelling to the Bahamas to report on that country's recent experience with Nova Scotia-based company Emera Inc.
Emera, also the parent company of Nova Scotia Power, took ownership of the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) in late 2010. Since then, residents have faced skyrocketing utility bills, loss of service without cause, and a slew of other power-related problems, according to Operation Justice for Grand Bahama, a group formed in opposition to the Nova Scotia company.
Operation Justice has collected 5,000 signatures on a petition outlining Bahamian customers' grievances to Emera, from a population of just over 19,000 people.
Last November, two members of Operation Justice visited Nova Scotia to compare their experiences with those of Nova Scotians.
On July 9, an audit report of GBPC by PricewaterhouseCoopers was released, which Operation Justice says confirms its allegations against the power company.
Miles Howe is in the Bahamas from August 1-9 and will be reporting his findings for the
Halifax Media Co-op. To set up a phone interview from the Bahamas, please contact Mr. Howe at
