Margaree Environmental Association Final Half Day in Court

Tuesday July 17th, 9:30 am, Law Courts, Lower Water St. Halifax, N.S.

by Margaree Environmental Association

The Margaree Environmental Association final 1/2 day of its Legal Appeal of the Department of Environment’s decision to approve the drilling of an oil well in the Lake Ainslie area of Cape Breton.

The Appeal raises a number of matters of great concern, including that the approved drilling location is too close -less than 100m to homes and watercourses, and that the Minister and his Department have failed in their duties in issuing the drilling approval.  The nearby watercourses  feed into Lake Ainslie which is part of the Margaree River, the most important salmon river in Nova Scotia, that is pristine enough to be a Canadian Heritage River.

This permit is widely opposed by local residents and the general community, and sets a precedent by permitting a drill site in an inappropriate location in respect to human habitation and the environment.
