Dear Public Health Care Advocates,
Canada’s First Ministers are meeting in Halifax from July 25-27 as the Council of the Federation. The future of public health care is on the agenda.
In December 2011, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives announced they would cut funding for public health care by $31 billion from 2017-2024. In Nova Scotia this will result in an annual revenue loss of $154 million. Then the Harper Conservatives walked away from the negotiating table.
The Nova Scotia Citizens’ Health Care Network, Council of Canadians, and allies are organizing several public events to show the premiers that Canadians are watching and we want action to protect, strengthen and extend public health care. The federal government must return to the negotiating table.

Wednesday, July 18 – Join the Council of Canadians, Health Network and the Maritime Heart Centre in an exercise flash mob to protect public health care in the lead up to the Council of the Federation meetings. 7:30 AM in front of the Spring Garden Road Public Library.

Wednesday, July 25 – The Council of Canadians and Health Network are partnering with Puppets Ect! to hold our version of a P3 – a Premiers Puppets Parade!
Our message to Canada’s premiers is clear: Don’t be puppets, stand up to Stephen Harper, protect public health care! 1:00 PM starting at the Spring Garden Road Library and marching to the waterfront.

Wednesday, July 25 – The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions is hosting a Lunch & Learn on innovation in health care. 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Victoria Park (Corner of Spring Garden and South Park)
Wednesday, July 25 – The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions will be holding a primary health care clinic in Victoria Park from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Come learn more about public health care, get your blood pressure taken and meet nurses from across the country.
Thursday, July 26 – The Health Network and Council of Canadians host a media conference on our collective vision for Medicare in the future. 10:00 AM aboard the Tall Ship The Mar II.
The premiers are meeting in a hotel on the waterfront. They have booked every room so there is no space for a media conference. Instead we’re bringing it to them by parking The Mar II right outside their hotel. Space is extremely limited on the Tall Ship and advanced tickets will be required. We have 20 tickets available for free on a first come, first serve basis. We are encouraging folks who cannot get tickets to attend a mini-rally on the waterfront with signs, noisemakers and bright red Medicare umbrellas.
Thursday, July 26 – Megan Leslie MP for Halifax, and Libby Davies, MP for East Vancouver, are hosting a forum on the future of public health care. 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in room 105 at the Weldon Law Building at Dalhousie University.
Friday, July 27 - No public events planned. There will be national and provincial spokespeople on standby to respond to the first ministers’ communique about their decisions.
All of the events are free, and we encourage supporters of public health care to attend.
