The CPP and Retirement
There are a couple of issues that could be covered around the issue of retirement income in Halifax and Nova Scotia. This is an issue affecting all Nova Scotian's or their family at some point in their lives and is extremely important.
- Has anyone done coverage on the Canadian Pension Plan, how much the average person gets paid? Interviews with people living on average monthly payments?
- How are CPP payments invested and what kinds of companies do we derive interest on our CPP payments from?
- How can the pension system be improved?
- What percentage of people are relying on the CPP and Old Age Security alone???

GMOs in food
It would do the public a great disservice if you did not initiate ongoing updates on GMOs in our food supply, the history, the dangers and where they can be found. It is a crucial story that involves absolutely everyone and there are lots of folks that are unaware of the severity of the problem in regards to the global food supply and Monsanto's stated imperative of controlling it. This is a very serious story that needs to be told to everyone who will listen, as it is playing out right now and our children's health and our freedom to choose how we eat is at stake. There is lots of material there to be covered and it is a pivotal point in human history that is playing out from backyard gardens to industrial farms on a global scale.
Great job!

Fur Farming in the maritimes
The enviromental disaster that is happening in Yarmouth county with the blessing of the Dept of Agriculture is only the tip of the iceberg...PEI, Newfoundland, Labrador,NB have no idea what they are in for. Our water is polluted, kids can't swim, fishing impacted..it's a mess and the govt doesn't care. It supports mink and the fur industry and has publicly said so
I read Steven Wentlands article in May and would love it if he would follow doa follow up story
It has only got worse and the govt is not even acknowledged our letters and suggestions.

Cruise ships
Mainstream media talks about the cruise ship industry all the time on the business pages, without looking at the environmental impact of the ships, labour conditions for employees, and other factors. With so many of these in the Halifax Harbour it'd be great to look into the issue a bit more. The Dominion did something on this a few years ago but it'd be good to do a local follow-up.
Education
There are a number of stories that could come from the realm of education, in particular the P-12 variety. How many of us know what kids are taught? Some of these story suggestions are more general, i.e. could apply to more than just NS, but some are more localized. For example:
-What role are standardized tests playing in education?
-In public high schools in NS, students now take only one of: Canadian History, African Canadian Studies, or Mi'kmaq Studies. How many students are choosing each course, and why? What implications does this have?
-Every year, the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies puts out a "report card" for all schools. What's behind these rankings? What does AIMS consider a good or bad school?
-What courses are required of students to graduate, and how has this changed over the years? What is the ratio of math to language to social studies to fine arts to business and technology courses, and what is the rationale for these requirements?
