Antigonish: Candidates Forum on Poverty Reduction

by Philip Girvan

See video

In 2010, the Antigonish Poverty Reduction Coalition (APRC), an alliance of individuals, groups, and organizations concerned with poverty alleviation, was formed to investigate how poverty affects the health and well being of our community and each of us. Discouraged by the lack of discussion re poverty issues during the election campaign, the APRC hosted the Candidates Forum on Poverty Reduction on September 23, 2013. All three candidates were present and answered questions prepared by members of the APRC including the Antigonish Town & County Community Health Board, the Antigonish Emergency Fuel Fund, the Antigonish Women's Resource Centre & Sexual Assault Services Association, and the Antigonish County Adult Learning Association surrounding issues of poverty in Antigonish Town and County.

Topics included:

Health Services

Income Security

Transportation

Housing

Food Security

Education

Childcare

Energy Poverty

Recreation

Candidates were permitted to make opening and closing statements, and also answered questions from the audience. Full video here.
