Mayworks Halifax is an annual cultural festival bringing workers and artists together in
the fight for social justice.

ELEVEN EVENTS presented at the Halifax Central Library, the Bus Stop Theatre, the
Company House and the NSCAD Art Bar.

WORKS AND PERFORMANCES by the All Nations Drum group, DaPoPo Theatre,
Zach Gough, iMOVe, Cassie Thornton and the Art and Activism Collective at NSCAD,
Zach Faye, Cory Bowles, Raghed Charabaty and many more!

2016 Program Overview

• Opening Ceremony
  April 27, 6:30pm Halifax Central Library | FREE

Featuring a keynote address by Indigenous elder Bill Lewis followed by a performance by the
All Nations Drum group.

• Honour Your Word
  April 27, 7:00pm Halifax Central Library | FREE

A documentary film by Nova Scotia filmmaker Martha Stiegman. An intimate portrait of life
behind the barricades for the Algonquins of Barriere Lake, an inspiring First Nation whose
dignity and courage contrast sharply with the political injustice they face.

• Making Out With Marx: A Philosophile's Orgy
  April 28-30, 7:00pm The Bus Stop Theatre | $15

A theatrical exploration of the economic forces and ideological structures that create and destroy intimacy and the possibilities of emotional and sexual relationships. An interactive dialogue about
money, sex, politics, and gender presented by DaPoPo Theatre.

• Performing Arts Workers
  April 28-May 12 The Bus Stop Theatre | FREE

A series of portraits by Zach Faye The first presentation of an ongoing photo series. The project
documents the local arts community, celebrates the individual artists, and acknowledges the
continuing contributions of invaluable arts workers.

• Precarious Creative Workers of the World: Little Red Songbook Launch
  May 1, 2:30PM The Company House | $5 (includes songbook)

The Precarious Creative Workers of the World Little Red Songbook is a re-working of the
infamous Industrial Workers of the World Little Red Songbook, a small publication with over
36 editions published over the past 100 years that mobilized union support and solidarity
between workers in the 20th century. This new launch - part live performance, part karaoke –
reflects the new conditions of labour for 21st century creative workers.

• Shout Out From the Inside: Life Story Monologues
  May 2, 2:00PM & 7:00PM The Bus Stop Theatre | $20

A theatrical presentation of life story monologues created in collaboration with In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association, actor Jacob Sampson and former Halifax poet laureate El Jones.
Through collaborative mentorship, inmates and former inmates will perform music, spoken word, personal monologues and theatre to communicate how who they have been has shaped who they have become and the struggles they face along their path towards their future selves.

• Overflowing Afterwork Yoga & Pub
  May 3-8, weekdays 5:30PM-7:00PM/weekend 11:00AM-12:30PM | FREE

The Feminist Economics Department (The FED) will host happy hour for people who are
finished with work. Our Happy Hour consists of a traditional overflow of beverages as well as a
post-work yoga class. This powerful flow will squeeze your sacred beliefs in economic
industriousness as your highest calling. You will shriek when your authentic happy baby exerts
a slow but continual downward pressure on your assumption that work is the most central
feature of your adult life.

• Fugitives of the Creative Economy: The labour and resistance of young culture workers in precarious times
  May 9, 6:00PM Halifax Central Library | FREE

It’s no secret: work (and lack of work) in the cultural
sector in Nova Scotia is tough, especially for young people. This roundtable discussion and
workshop examines the deeper causes and diverse consequences of these trends. But it also
offers visions of solidarity and struggle by and for young workers in the ‘creative economy,’ as
well as time to build relationships and new collaborations.

• Fortune and Men’s Eyes: a staged reading presented by Queer Acts
  May 10, 7:00PM The Bus Stop Theatre | $5

How do we confront important but dated pieces from the queer theatre cannon? Queer Acts will
host a staged reading of the classic play Fortune and Men's Eyes, debating its importance in the
history of queer theatre, and asking the question: is this script still relevant? The reading will
include a moderated discussion on queer history in Canada, incarceration of homosexuals, and queer theatre.

• Reel Justice
  May 12, 6:30PM Halifax Central Library | FREE

Our movie screens are colonized by Hollywood and its big business interests. Reel Justice responds with a collection of short films you won’t see at the multiplex. Local filmmakers
celebrate our many and varied heroes and wrangle with the issues of social justice that affect our community.
