NSRAP Names AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton for 2013 Turret Stewardship Award

by NSRAP

HALIFAX, NS – The AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton (ACCB) will receive the 2013 Turret Stewardship Award presented by the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project (NSRAP).

“NSRAP is extremely pleased and proud to honor The AIDS Coalition of Cape Breton for their dedication to improving the lives of LGBTQ Cape Bretoners and people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs),” said Lisa Buchanan, NSRAP Board Chair.

Using programming developed originally by Evan Coole and more recently by Madonna Doucette, ACCB is focused on providing a safe space for LGBTQ Nova Scotians, streetactive people, injection drug users, and PHAs. Their services, which range from educational training and workshops to monthly peer support meetings, are available to every Cape Bretoner. Doucette does workshops for schools, supports gay-straight alliances (GSAs), meets with people in crisis, and tirelessly ensures these services are accessible beyond the Sydney area.

“We are honored and humbled to receive this award”, said Chris Porter, ACCB Executive Director. “We accept this award with the realization of all the hard work and contributions from many wonderful, like-minded organizations and individuals without which none of this would have been possible.”

The award will be presented at NSRAP’s annual Community Heroes Gala on November 2, 2013 at the Atlantica Hotel. Tickets for the event are $125/person ($1,250/table of 10) and can be purchased online at: nsrap.ca/gala.
