The Halifax labour organization promotes and participates in the activities through the week leading to IWD, and believes that every day is an opportunity to make a difference for women.
"International Womens Day is a day for reflection and hope. We have alot to be proud of, and a lot to celebrate." states Joyclin Coates, Vice President of Women's Rights for the HDDLC.
However, Coates feels that although gains have been made, women today still face many struggles. "We have a lot to celebrate, but there is still much work to be done for equality and social justice for women."
The first IWD occured in 1911, when millions of women marched the streets in different parts of Europe to acheive the right to vote. In 1977, the United Nations recognized March 8th as a day for women's rights.
