Halifax Media Co-op Call for Pitches

Contribute to grassroots media! Get paid!

by Editor

Stories from the perspective of marginalized communities in Halifax will be prioritized, including, but not limited to: people with disabilities, immigrants and refugees, Black communities, First Nations communities, LGBTQ people, and those living in poverty.

You have three options:

1.  The 'mega' pitch (3 paid stories in March — $100 each)

To pitch an article, send us less than 200 words outlining:

a) the topic and angle you will cover, b) who you will interview and what sources you will consult, and c) one line bio of yourself, and a link to your previous work (if applicable).

Articles are either 800 or 1,600 words.

Writers do not necessarily need previous journalism experience but should be familiar with the Halifax Media Co-op's work and have read over the contributor guidelines. They should be prepared for a rigorous editing process. Contributors with prior experience writing for the HMC will be given priority.

Deadline for pitches is Friday, March 8 by 5 p.m.

Deadline for stories will be approximately two weeks later. Photographs are expected with the final piece.

Send your pitch to: hmc@mediacoop.ca. Please include 'Mega Pitch' in your email subject line.

2.  The Just Us! Just Journalism! pitch (1 paid story in March — $100)

The Halifax Media Co-op has been fortunate enough to receive year-long funding from Just Us! Coffee to run a series of articles dealing with food security, sustainable farming, co-ops and fair trade as they relate to Nova Scotia and the Maritimes.

To pitch an article on these topics, send us less than 200 words outlining:

a) the topic and angle you will cover, b) who you will interview and what sources you will consult, and c) one line bio of yourself, and a link to your previous work (if applicable).

Articles are either 800 or 1,600 words.

3. The 'mini' pitch (1 story per week — $40 each)

This pitch is for time-sensitive news stories and are accepted on an ongoing basis. Pitches should be short and to the point.

400-800 word articles, well-written blog posts as well as edited audio and video pieces will be considered for these spots.

Writers do not necessarily need previous journalism experience but should be familiar with the Halifax Media Co-op's work and have read over the contributor guidelines. Pieces will not go through a rigorous editing process, but they will be copy edited.

Pieces should be submitted within 48 hours of being assigned.  Photographs are expected to be submitted as well.

Interested contributors should write to hmc@mediacoop.ca with their intent to cover a story. Please include 'Mega Pitch' in your email subject line.
