Peace activist heading to New Glasgow and Truro to tell Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Conservative MP Scott Armstrong not to waste tax dollars on warships

by Tamara Lorincz

(New Glasgow / Truro / Halifax ) - A peace activist who has been protesting
the $25 billion warship contract every week outside the Irving Shipyard in
Halifax is heading up to New Glasgow and Truro today. Tamara Lorincz is
going to deliver open letters to Defence Minister Peter MacKay in his New
Glasgow office and to Conservative MP Scott Armstrong in his Truro office.
Parliament is not sitting this week so Members of Parliament are expected to
be in their ridings.

"The federal government is preparing a new budget and MPs MacKay and
Armstrong have invited Canadians to send them their ideas to achieve the
best use of taxpayers' dollars. So, I'm going to tell them not to waste our
money on warships that we don't need," Lorincz said.

She will also be delivering petitions calling on the federal government to
redirect military spending to urgent social and environmental programs.
"The federal government should be investing in the priorities of Canadians:
healthcare, education and the environment. Plus, if the federal government
really cares about job creation they should know that more jobs could be
created in a green economy than building warships."

Lorincz is further concerned that the warship contract is a risk to tax
payers like the F-35 fiasco. "I'm going to tell our Members of Parliament
that they have increased our country's national debt to $606 billion and
they are running an annual deficit of $26 billion. We simply cannot afford
the financial risk of the warships."

Lorincz will bring her signs "Action on Poverty & Climate Change: No
Warships" and "Green Jobs; No Warships" and she will stand outside MacKay's
office in New Glasgow at 11 a.m. and Armstrong's office in Truro at 2 p.m.
