African Heritage Month’s Opening Night is Here!

Celebration Kicks-Off Multiple Programs & Events

by Halifax Public Libraries

Halifax, NS – On Thursday January 31 at 7 PM, on the eve of the African Heritage Month, a gathering of notable dignitaries, community members, and event organizers are set to fill the Halifax North Memorial Public Library with their special greetings, songs, libations, and prayer for the 29th Annual African Heritage Month.

“Opening night is always a delight to attend and host,” says Darla Muzzerall, Branch Manager of the Halifax North Memorial Public Library.  “Everywhere you look, you can see the legacy of African Heritage Month in the people it attracts. Musicians, religious leaders, educators, government officials, and plenty of highly invested individuals are actively engaged. The event is a joyful time and a great way to kick-off some fantastic events.”

After the opening night, African Heritage Month offers 25 programs for people of all ages and across the Halifax Public Libraries’ system. There is Dr. Henry Bishop presenting a program for teens called BEAT the Bullying in Spryfield, Evelyn C. White talking about Alice Walker in Clayton Park, and the ever-popular Youth Quiz happening once more in Halifax and Dartmouth.  There are four fascinating film screenings, many fun story times and activities for children, quick lessons on African drumming and dance, an author reading by local hero Craig Smith, a spoken word performance by multi-talented Shauntay Grant, and a lively panel discussion on Africentricity with some brilliant local educators.

“All of these incredible programs and celebrations are possible due to the many supporters we have attracted over the years,” says Crystal Mulder of the Black History Month Association. “We are very fortunate to have Halifax Public Libraries as our partner and are thankful for the support of government and community.”

African Heritage Month takes place every year during the month of February.  Details on programs and events for 2013 can be found in the Library Guide at all Halifax Public Libraries through or online at halifaxpubliclibraries.ca.
