imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the largest festival of its kind
in the world celebrating works created by Indigenous artists in film,
video, radio and new media, is travelling for the first time to the
Atlantic Provinces through a new research and outreach presentation to
communities and organizations starting January 10 – 19th, 2013.
Spurred by a drive to better represent and connect to the Indigenous arts
landscape in Atlantic Canada, a main goal of this initiative is to bring
together East Coast Aboriginal communities, established artists and arts
organizations (funders, production companies, festivals, artist run
centres, educational institutions) in an exchange of ideas about current
arts practices to foster opportunities to increase Indigenous media art
production and forge new links and opportunities for partnership.
imagineNATIVE invites you to join or recommend current and potential
Indigenous arts supporters to scheduled “focus groups” in key centres. The
main meeting will take place in Halifax on January 11th (time and location
TBC).
The objectives of these meetings are:
- For imagineNATIVE to better understand the Indigenous artistic
landscape and its creating artists and organizations in Eastern Canada
- to identify current partnerships, opportunities, initiatives
currently in place that support Indigenous arts creation
- identify the challenges and obstacles faced by artists in creating
work (funding, production, resources, lack of interest or understanding of
importance/role?)
- identify existing organizations that have like-minded mandates (to
support youth, mentorship, culture) with whom new initiatives could be
started
- brainstorm new opportunities and initiatives between attendees and
how these could be developed, financed, implemented and showcased (outside
of iN, potentially by other festivals, centres, etc).
- put in place strategies and networks to develop collaborations or
professional development in media arts in each province
- for imagineNATIVE to return with a network of long-term partners,
supporters, artists with whom to disseminate opportunities in Indigenous
media arts through their own respective networks, and opportunities for
exhibition of programmed works in film, video, radio and new medi
