Halifax, NS–A rush of activities is about to surround the 32nd Atlantic Film Festival as the Halifax Public Libraries produces Cinemania, a month-long, city-wide series of over twenty free programs at fourteen branches.
“With all of the libraries participating and with the help of our excellent partners at the Atlantic Film Festival, we were able to build a wide variety of film-related programs for all ages,” says Heather MacKenzie, Branch Manager for the Keshen Goodman Library and leader of the Cinemania project. “We have events that are meant for pure entertainment and some designed to inspire creativity.”
Cinemania’s schedule offers a mix of formats and subjects. There are free screenings that explore a range of topics from health and war to music and dance, and there are filmmaking workshops on screenwriting, animation, and blue screen technology. Many local filmmakers are taking part, such as Michael Melski, as well as film experts, such as Dr. Charles Beaupre of Saint Mary’s University.
“Supporting the local filmmaking community is important to the library,” says MacKenzie. “We see it as an integral part of promoting visual literacy and an appreciation for this form of storytelling. In the end, we hope to create more ‘cinemaniacs’ on both sides of the camera.
