Growing Independent Media! Workshop

Effective news reporting means writing lively stories about people for people. Part I of this Halifax Media Coop workshop aims to help participants write compelling stories from a grassroots perspective. Participants will learn how to structure stories to capture reader interest and how to integrate facts and quotes in ways that make their work both informative and enjoyable. The workshop will discuss the techniques involved in reporting news events as well as writing feature stories that examine important issues. Participants will be invited to write their own stories for the Halifax Media Coop.

In Part II, we will discuss those stories and the hands-on experiences that shaped them.

Both workshops will be conducted as seminars in which people will be encouraged to share their ideas about effective storytelling.

Bruce Wark is a retired journalism ethics professor who taught for 15 years at the University of Kings College. Before that, he worked for nearly 20 years for the CBC Radio News Service. Bruce served as the producer in charge of such network news programs as World Report, World at Six and The House. He also worked as legislative reporter at the Ontario Legislature and as National Reporter covering the Maritime provinces. Bruce’s last job with CBC was as producer of Media File, a network radio program that critically examined journalism and the news media. Bruce contributes editorials and news features to The Coast and is a member of the Halifax Media Coop.
