The Realities of Refuge: Film Screening & Discussion

On International Human Rights Day, join the Halifax Refugee Clinic and the NS Health Coalition for a screening of the documentary Seeking Refuge and panel discussion exploring Canada's complex and changing refugee system.

The panel will be composed of three refugees who now call Canada home, as well as Peter Showler, former chairperson of the Immigration and Refugee Board and former director of the Refugee Forum at the University of Ottawa. The panelists will speak to the barriers they faced coming here, Canada’s complex and changing refugee system, and answer questions from members of the audience.

After the film and panel discussion you are encouraged to stay for light refreshments and socializing with members of the Halifax Refugee Clinic and others who attended the viewing. 

The Halifax Refugee Clinic (HRC) is a non profit, non governmental, organization that provides no cost legal and settlement services to refugee claimants, refugees, and people in need of protection who cannot afford the services of private legal counsel. The HRC was created to ensure that some of the world’s most vulnerable and persecuted people receive support and representation while they seek a safe haven in our communities.

Nova Scotia Health Coalition is an organization that advocates for public health care. This includes advocating for immediate health reforms, while building towards larger strategies for addressing poverty, racism, inadequate housing, education, and inequality – all barriers to a healthy society. The Health Coalition is a network of community groups, organized labor, women’s organizations, students, and individuals. This is a political, but non-partisan, group and receives no government funding.
