Through both presentation and facilitated discussion, this workshop will explore critical struggles for radical social change inspired by anti-authoritarian politics and what they tell us about strategies for movement-building and radical social change today.

People's struggles for collective liberation have driven some of the most dramatic moments of social change in history. Often associated with anti-authoritarian and prefigurative politics, this current has also run up against problems of "scaling up" from fringe to mass movements, effectively figuring out and doing something about the relationship between oppression and exploitation, and taking organizations and institutions seriously without succumbing to them. Following a brief presentation of some critical moments in people's struggles for radical social change in the spirit of social justice, this workshop will consider the concrete challenges and promises of building a robust, effective, and powerful anti-authoritarian politics in the age of austerity.

Presenter: Alex Khasnabish: Alex teaches sociology and anthropology at Mount Saint Vincent University and is co-director (with Max Haiven) of the Radical Imagination Project. With a history in social justice activism and organizing, today Alex seeks to research, educate, and write with radical anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist movements as a way of contributing to radical social change.

This event is part of Anti-Fest, a weekend of events being generously sponsored by The Radical Imagination Project.
