Coastal Living 2050: A Design Charette for the Halifax Waterfront Join Ecology Action Centre, Dalhousie School of Planning, Halifax Regional Municipality, and Waterfront Development to design a "Climate Smart" Halifax Waterfront
This is a free public event affiliated with Coastal Zone Canada 2014
Monday, June 16th, 1:30-5:30 Small Craft Gallery, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
Over the coming decades, sea level rise, storm surges, and extreme weather will have a huge impact on our coastal ecosystems, communities, and infrastructure. Yet climate change also creates an opportunity for creativity, collaboration and innovation, as we restore and re-design coastal areas in the face of evolving conditions. Please join us on June 16th for a design charette to re-imagine a more resilient Halifax Waterfront to face the projected climate change impacts of the year 2050.
A charette is a creative workshop that brings together people with many different interests and perspectives along with planners and designers to brainstorm ideas, options, and solutions to meet a specific planning and design challenge - in this case, (re) designing a truly "climate smart" waterfront on a portion of the Halifax Waterfront.
A charette is a burst of creative energy. In a short time, participants supported by charette facilitators create concept plans and designs. We will work in teams for our charette to see how the same challenge can generate different responses. Participants can arrive as a team or singly, to join a team on site.
We will work right on the Waterfront inside the Small Crafts Gallery at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. We will walk along the Boardwalk to visit our redesign site, and also provide participants with maps, images, and background material, as well as all drawing and sketching tools.
We welcome planners, and designers, as well as geologists, wildlife biologists, students, and interested citizens. No prior experience necessary. We welcome your participation for a few minutes or the whole afternoon. However, only work produced by teams that have participated in the entire charette (1:30 - 5:30 pm, will be showcased during the Coastal Zone Canada Poster session.
This is a public event associated with Coastal Zone Canada. It is free to registered participants, as well as to the general public. To help us plan the day, please indicate your intent to participate by completing the attached sign up form.
