Venue: the boardwalk (behind the CBRM Civic Centre)
In recent weeks, New Dawn has grown increasingly concerned as another round of budgetary cuts have meant further staffing reductions at CBC Cape Breton. These are not the first cuts and most likely, will not be the last. Hubert LaCroix, President of CBC, has said that CBC must reinvent itself as a public broadcaster. It is uncertain what this reinvention will mean for CBC Cape Breton. The local station has lost two positions in the last year, a reporter and a technician. A staff of over 100 in the 1980's has been reduced to twelve people today.
CBC has been an important voice in the community, especially for culture and economic development. CBC educates the public about issues that are important in our area. It features local artists and musicians. It's a watchdog, keeping those spending our tax dollars accountable. It's a forum for debate and discussion. It’s a voice that we must keep strong.
New Dawn is calling on the community to show its support for CBC Cape Breton. Please join us and others at the Rally to Support CBC Cape Breton in Sydney this Friday May 30th. The Rally will take place on the boardwalk (behind the CBRM Civic Centre) starting at noon. In the event of rain, it will move into the adjacent Round Room
