Xenotransplantation is the use of organs and cells from a non-human species to treat disease in humans. It has enormous potential to meet the increasing demand for transplantable organs. However, while science is making progress in this area, there are still many medical risks, not least of which is the possibility of transferring an infectious agent from an animal to the human population.
While much of the debate around xenotransplantation is focused on safety, there are substantial ethical issues which the discussion will explore.
