Halifax Activists, Citizens and Students join “Let People Vote!” National Day of Action

12:00pm
- 1:00pm
Mardi Mars 25 2014

Venue: Megan Leslie’s constituency office
Address: 2207 Gottingen Street

Communities across Canada are coming together to protest US-style voter suppression measures in the Conservatives’ Fair Elections Act, Bill C-23.

Halifax. Citizens in Halifax concerned for the health and transparency of democracy join with over 25 communities across Canada in a national day of action to oppose Bill C-23, the “Fair Elections Act.”

The day of action comes after a recent poll showed that a majority of Canadians oppose the provisions that could disenfranchise hundreds of thousands, prevent Elections Canada from publicly reporting on election fraud, and cancel Elections Canada’s research and public education programs.

In just a few weeks over 80,000 Canadians have  signed petitions calling on Conservative MPs to make key changes or scrap the bill entirely. Participants will deliver the 80,000 signatures to MPs during rallies at their constituency offices on March 25th.

The action at Megan Leslie’s constituency office located at 2207 Gottingen Street, will take place on Tuesday, March 25 at 12pm.

Local volunteers are organizing the event with national support and facilitation by Leadnow.ca, the Council of Canadians, and the Canadian Federation of Students.

“This supposedly ‘Fair’ piece of legislation is anything but,” said local organizer Katelynn Northam. “This bill could make it harder for students, First Nations people, and low-income people to vote in 2015. We want to send the message that Canadians support greater access to voting, not less. We also want to thank the Opposition parties for working against this bill over the last few weeks, and to encourage them to continue fighting it.”

Who: A diverse group of Halifax citizens with serious concerns about the “Fair Elections Act”.

Where: 2207 Gottingen Street, Suite 1.

When: Tuesday, March 25, 12pm.
