Is the gap between rich and poor growing in Halifax?

On Wednesday, March 19 (2014), from 7 to 9 pm the Halifax Neighbourhood Change Research Partnership will host a community meeting to discuss the findings of recent research about growing income inequality in Halifax. Anyone interested in understanding how patterns of affluence and poverty have shifted in HRM between 1970 and 2010 is welcome to attend. Researchers will present study results and ask participants for suggestions of further research needed. The meeting will be held in the Marian McCain (FASS) building on the Dalhousie Campus, 6135 University Ave, Room 1116, 7 to 9 pm, March 19.

Some key findings of the research:

-- Halifax is less economically polarized than larger Canadian cities.
-- Average individual incomes in census tracts on the Halifax Peninsula increased relative to the HRM average over time.
-- The average income of people living in suburbs built after the Second World War decreased relative to the city average over time.
