Colonialism, misogyny, and capitalism are deeply interconnected, and activists cannot engage in feminist or anti-capitalist struggle without also working to decolonize ourselves, our relations with one another, and the spaces & land we inhabit. This workshop is an introduction to some of the thought and work of Indigenous Feminists on occupied Turtle Island (“North America”).
Two-Spirit is a blanket term used by Indigenous peoples to define and decolonize queer and trans* identities. Historically, colonize...rs have violently and systemically persecuted Two-Spirit peoples. The enforcement of Eurocentric, patriarchal, cisnormative, and heteronormative values on Indigenous peoples has continued to persecute Two-Spirit peoples on a neocolonial basis. Historical Two-Spirit identities among Indigenous peoples across "North America" and contemporary movements of2-Spirit peoples, who have reclaimed the term in a very political sense, will be explored.
Lindsay Nixon is Two-Spirit and from the Tootinaowaziibeeng Nation currently displaced in contested Algonquin and Haudenosaunee territories. Lindsay is a student, activist and researcher focusing on feminisms and first peoples.
Molly Swain is a Métis anarcha-feminist hailing from the seam that separates mountain from prairie in the deep West of colonized Assiniboia. Molly and Lindsay are the co-founders ofthe Indigenous Women and Two- Spirit Harm Reduction Coalition.
