Medical Whistleblowing: Protecting Society’s Protectors

Presentation and Public Discussion

7:00pm
Lundi Mars 25 2013

Venue: Theatre C, Tupper Building, Dalhousie University
Address: 5850 College Street
Cost: Free

Presenters: Nancy Olivieri (Senior Scientist & Medical Doctor), D. Rob MacDougall (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Impact Ethics)

Dr. Olivieri acted as a whistleblower when she took her observations of harms associated with the drug deferiprone public. This presentation will include Dr. Olivieri's personal account of the difficulties she faced in reporting her findings to her employer, and eventually to the public. Dr. Rob MacDougall, a postdoctoral fellow with Impact Ethics at Dalhousie University, will explore the history of whistleblowing in Canada, the existing protections for some whistleblowers, and the possiblities for offering increased protection. The discussion will go beyond just the issue of academic integrity and freedom, to the public's stake in the accountability of Canadian institutions and employers.
