Monday, Jan. 14 marks the special Halifax visit of Israeli-Canadian filmmaker b.h. Yael to speak and to show two films - Deir Yassin Remembered and Ken, Tov, Beseder (Yes, Good, All Right).
Description of film Deir Yassin Remembered (30 minutes)
"Deir Yassin Remembered" deals with the past by focusing on a well-documented incident of the Nakba (Catastrophe, the Palestinian term for the takeover of their land in 1948) - the destruction of the thriving community of Deir Yassin. On April 9, 1948, Zionist militias massacred approximately 100 Palestinian men, women and children in the village of Deir Yassin. The village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; it had a peaceful reputation. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The documentary combines historic footage and contemporary commentary to provide a fascinating representation of this key event in Israeli/Palestinian history. The film argues for the need for acknowledgment and commemoration. Deir Yassin Remembered is part of Palestine Trilogy.
Description of film Ken, Tov, Beseder (4 minutes)
A Palestinian man in his garden in Jerusalem is called out through Jerusalem streets, past the Damascus gate, out past settlements and the wall. At times acquiescent, at times frustrated, soothing and insistent, he negotiates through three Hebrew words, “ken, tov, beseder” Yes, good, all right. But what negotiation is to be had?"
