Ilse Derluyn obtained her PhD in Pedagogical Sciences at Ghent University with a dissertation on the emotional well-being of unaccompanied refugee minors. From 2000 until 2002, after obtaining her master in orthopedagogics (special education) at Ghent University, she worked as a music therapist in a psychiatric hospital. From 2002 until now, she is affiliated at the Department of Orthopedagogics - Ghent University as researcher, first as doctoral researcher, and now as post-doctoral researcher, both with grants from the Special Research Fund of Ghent University.

Ilse has been involved in several research projects in the fields of
(forced) migration, refugees and war-affected children and adolescents, such as studies on psychosocial well-being of unaccompanied refugee minors, trafficking of minors, drug use in migrant populations, child soldiers, emotional well-being of war-affected adolescents in Eastern Congo, therapeutic care for unaccompanied refugee minors.

Ilse also teaches different courses on migration, refugee health, transculturalisation and diversity at Ghent University (master in pedagogical sciences and master in social work) and at the Brussels School of the University of Kent, and has a large experience in training and supervision of social workers supporting migrant, refugee and war-affected populations.

Since its start, Ilse is the acting coordinator of the Centre for Children in Vulnerable Situations.
