In honour of October 11, 2012, declared by the United Nations to be the first annual International Day of the Girl - ‘Girls Run the World,’ will take place on Friday, October 26th, 2012 at the Banook Canoe Club in Dartmouth. This is a full day event that is aimed at celebrating girls as citizens and powerful voices of change in our communities. Girls and girl groups from the HRM as well as other Nova Scotia communities are invited to come and participate in activities such as screen-printing, kite-making, dancing, choreography, poetry and spoken-word.

This event is a partnership between Avalon Sexual Assault Centre and Nicole Landry (funded by the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women).

Nicole Landry is the author of The Mean Girl Motive (Fernwood Publishing, 2008), a book based on her graduate work with adolescent girls that explores female aggression and bullying behaviour. She has collaborated with various groups and organizations around the HRM on youth-focused and girl-specific projects as well as spearheaded her own initiative, Girl Talk Video. Nicole is passionate about creating space for girls and young women to express their thoughts, ideas and experiences through photography and video.

Avalon Sexual Assault Centre receives funding from the Canadian Women’s Foundation in support of our Sexual Assault Youth Outreach Education Project. Through this project Avalon Centre is providing sexual assault awareness, prevention, empowerment, and mobilization education through arts based activities to youth, mainly girls, ages 9-18.

The day's events will be chronicled on video-tape. Also, girls who participate in this event will be invited to share - on video - the poetry they write, aspirations they have for the future and thoughts that they have about being a girl. From this footage, we will be creating a short video that will commemorate the spirit of the day and share the ideas, thoughts and messages put forth by the girls who participated.

Open to girls or girl-identified youth of all ages.

Some travel compensation can be offered to groups from outside the HRM. Please contact us at  if you wish to request funds for travel.

Participants can register online at  or by filling out the attached registration form and submitting it via email to or by fax, 902-422-4628.

Registration Deadline is Tuesday, October 23rd and spaces are limited so register ASAP!
