Quebec students have a proud history of beating-back proposed tuition fee increases with large-scale student protests and strikes. This is why Quebec has the lowest tuition fees in the country.
Last fall, the Quebec government announced that they would increase tuition fees by 75% over five years. Students responded with the longest student strike in Canada's history and monthly demonstrations that drew as many as 300, 000 people.
Nearly eight months after the first students voted to strike, the newly elected PQ government has pledged to freeze tuition fees, for the time being.
Over the last two years thousands of Nova Scotia students have demonstrated in the streets against cuts to university funding and tuition fee hikes. We have won increases to up-front grants for students but must keep the pressure on the NDP government to reduce tuition fees.
On September 17 at 7PM in the McInnis room in the Dal SUB come hear from two representatives of CLASSE, the student group behind the strike, about how they mobilized hundreds of thousands of people and beat-back the tuition fee hike.
