A segment of our people have earned the handle of "Tim Cup Chucker" and "Tammy Doggydoodoo Dumper" I don't know who these people are but they drop their coffee cups and doodoo bags everywhere--on the exit ramps, in parks, sidewalks, power poles, parking lots, ditches. In a four block walk along a sidewalk on Young Street, I surveyed and picked up (I just wear old gloves to do so.) 40 Tim Horton's non-recyclable coffee cups and lids! I took these into the Tim's on the street just to point out their containers are by far the number one source of garbage. Just on one short segment of one street in one small city in one small province in one country. This is nothing short of an international epidemic---just with this one garbage item alone. I'm sure people who do this also dump bags of garbage on the highways; don't recycle and don't even think about how their behaviour encourages the continued habit of manufacturers to not discourage this by increasing the savings if you bring your own cup and legislate much higher fines for littering [Walkers are fined $697 for jaywalking but litterers only $250, so walking across a street in the wrong place is three times more criminal than walking and chucking garbage anywhere!].
And what can you say about dog owners who bless us with a double dose of delight--excrement in plastic? Pet excrement, just like horse and cow manure can be composted. For the home owners among dog owners, why not invest in a backyard composter and dispose of your pet's "anal chi" where it can do some good, creating beautiful flowers and yummy vegetables?
I had to laugh. This one particular pole where walkers were depositing both the Tim's cups and the doodoo bags on the pole's narrow shelf brought to mind: "Get your java fix and a bag of dog bits to go! Pop up Tim's at a "walk-by" pole near you!"
Why are corporations permitted to put the planet in such jeopardy by not limiting the production of these non-recyclable petroleum dependent throwaway products? I won't even go into Keurig cups! All so humans can demonstrate the height of laziness and wanton irresponsibility whitewashed as "convenience?" What it is really doing is contributing to the extinction of so many species. We extract resources for throwaway plastics and junk food destroying habitat, so a few people can be exorbitantly rich and we can continue to be the consuming and chucking cretins this behaviour indicates we are. What a purposeless-driven life we lead by not demanding that governments crack down on corporations for creating this mess and unconscious consumers for sleepwalking in it.
