Thank you to everyone who came out in support of the Halifax Media Coop in February. We're off to an exciting start!
We are a quarter of the way to our goal of 50 sustainers in Halifax. With your help we can create a local media that's interactive and democratic that features critical investigative journalism on issues important to your community. Please become a sustainer today!
Read on to find out what's new, what's to come, and how to get involved.
1) An update on the February Media Coop blitz
2) Please sustain!
3) Hosting an HMC presentation in your neighbourhood
4) Upcoming journalism skillshare series!
5) Cover your city! Important issues to report on and posting content on the HMC website.
1) Throughout the month of February we presented to labour unions, community groups and NGOs; in libraries, recreation centres and coffee shops. In total, we did 13 presentations to almost 200 people, pitching the idea of the HMC and encourage Haligonians to become sustainers and fund a grassroots, participatory and sophisticated media cooperative in Halifax.
The response has been great! The need for an alternative local media is clear in Halifax and there is a lot of enthusiasm to see the HMC succeed. Thirteen people have become sustainers (giving an average of $20 each month) and dozens more helped in organizing events, posting content and generally throwing their energy behind the initiative.
2) Our goal for the first year is to have 50 sustaining members of the Halifax Media Coop. This money will go towards paying an organizer part time, paying journalists for articles, and maintaining an active newswire and working groups. Although a lot is already happening, in order for us to begin to see the true potential of the HMC take form we need more financial support.
Please consider becoming a sustaining member and/or encouraging your organization to support the HMC. Contact hillary|a|mediacoop.ca for more information!
3) We are continuing to spread the word about the HMC to organizations, community groups, and gatherings of people living rooms.
If your workplace or bookclub or neighbours would like to know more about the Halifax Media Coop, please contact hillary|a|mediacoop.ca to learn more!
4) Over the next several weeks, we will be hosting a journalism skillshare series. The skillshare will cover journalism basics so participants can feel comfortable covering stories that are important to them. Details are yet to be determined, but mark the following dates on your calendar:
Tuesday March 31, 7pm : Print Journalism
Tuesday April 7, 7pm: Audio Journalism
Tuesday April 21, 7pm: Video Journalism
No experience is necessary and everyone is encouraged to come out! Each session will also include a quick tutorial on posting to the HMC website.
