Universities and the austerity agenda

by From the Margins

Robin Vose is the president of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) and a professor of history at St. Thomas University. Delegates of faculty unions across the country attended the annual meeting of the CAUT on May 1st, where they issued a condemnation of Nova Scotia's Bill 100, a bill that attacks the rights of academic workers in Nova Scotia. Robin has also recently written an editorial, "The Great Austerity Swindle" for the NB Media Coop. The interview addresses what austerity at universities means, the dangers that Bill 100 presents in Nova Scotia and beyond, corporatization / privatization of universities, and how these challenges are being confronted.
