NSPIRG BOARD NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS:
It’s that exciting time of year again when the faces of NSPIRG are in transition. What will PIRG look like next year? What new fast friendships and political analyses will be formed on the PIRG couch?
Are you interested in being one of those potential board members? Do you have a friend who you think would be a great part of PIRG? Even if you aren’t yet very involved becoming a board member is a great way to get in on what’s going on, and you’ll have a friendly team of other board members to introduce you to the world of PIRG. There are 7 board positions for Dalhousie students and 3 board positions for community members. Nomination packages are available for pick up in the NSPIRG office, room 314 of the Dal Student Union Building. If you can’t make it during office hours email me and I’ll get you a Nomination form and answer any questions: electNSPIRG@gmail.com.
The deadline for receiving nomination packages has been extended to Tuesday March 15th at 5pm. However, I will be advertising the elections and the candidates profiles before that date. I will be posting candidates profiles as I receive them, so the sooner you get them in the more exposure you get.
For all those who nominate themselves, and for all those who want to meet the candidates there will be a Candidates Meet and Greet Tuesday March 15th at 5pm. The location will be posted soon.
Voting will take place on March 28th and 29th. There will be a polling station in the Killam atrium both days, and one on Sexton Campus on the 28th and on Carleton campus the 29th, locations TBD. Mark your calendars so you don’t forget to vote!
NATO is taking over command of military operations in Libya from coalition forces, world media reported Sunday.
The UN Security Council imposed the no-fly zone over Libya on March 17, along with ordering "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from Muammar Gaddafi's attacks on rebel-held towns.
The 28 NATO ambassadors met on Sunday to decide on further military plans in Libya.
The United States transfers command for a no-fly zone over Libya to NATO, while coalition forces will continue to protect civilian population from attacks by Gaddafi forces.
The military operation in Libya, codenamed Odyssey Dawn, has been conducted so far jointly by 13 states, including the United States, Britain and France.
NATO members decided on Thursday to assume responsibility for the enforcement of a no-fly zone in Libya, but could not agree on taking full command of all military operations in the country.
Meanwhile, leaders of the 27 European Union states on Thursday issued a statement saying the EU stood ready to assist in building a new Libya "in cooperation with the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union and others."
