The Mayworks Halifax Festival opens with a ceremonial recognition of the Peace and Friendship Treaties that bind us together in the Atlantic region. We also recognize the land where we work, struggle and celebrate together in the spirit of those treaties. An opening address will be offered by Indigenous elder Billy Lewis and followed by drumming performed by the All Nations Drummers.

 Rhymes for Young Ghouls

Dir. Jeff Barnaby – 2013
April 30th – Free
Halifax Central Library
7:15pm – 86 Mins

Red Crow Mi’kmaq reservation, 1976: By government decree, every Indian child under the age of 16 must attend residential school. In the kingdom of the Crow, that means imprisonment at St. Dymphna’s. That means being at the mercy of “Popper”, the sadistic Indian agent who runs the school.

At 15, Aila is the weed princess of Red Crow. Hustling with her uncle Burner, she sells enough dope to pay Popper her “truancy tax”, keeping her out of St.Dymphna’s. But when Aila’s drug money is stolen and her father Joseph returns from prison, the precarious balance of Aila’s world is destroyed.

Her only options are to run or fight… and Mi’kmaq don’t run.

Awarded Best First Feature Film at the 2013 Vancouver Film Festival.
ACTRA Maritimes member Glen Gould awarded Best Actor at the American Indian Film Festival.
