Refugee claimants in Canada comprise some of the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our communities. Many Clinic clients have faced torture, physical violence, abuse, and severe discrimination in their home countries, and have had to leave families and worldly possessions behind in order to escape danger. Yet once here, they often find it difficult to access the services they need, in part because their temporary status disqualifies them from many programs available to other newcomers. The Halifax Refugee Clinic works hard to fill some of those gaps by providing no-cost legal and settlement services. The Clinic receives no government funding, and although we have the generous support of the Law Foundation of Nova Scotia, we rely heavily on private donations and on fundraising initiatives like this one to enable us to better meet our funding needs, and to sustain and continually develop our services.
