"Not So Silent" December 6 Vigil

5:30pm
- 8:00pm
Saturday December 6 2014

Venue: Halifax North Memorial Library & Company House
Address: Gottingen Street

Join us December 6, 2014 from 5:30 - 8:00pm on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women - 25 years after the Montreal Massacre. This gender inclusive event will start at 5:30pm at the Halifax North Memorial Library; followed by the warmth of the Company House at 2202 Gottingen Street for food, spoken word, music, action, sharing and inspiration featuring performances and speakers such as El Jones, Carmel Mikol, Megan Leslie MP, Women Next Door and more.

Not only does this year mark the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre but on the national stage the issue of violence against women has come to the forefront, with a call for a national inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women, the allegations of sexual violence perpetrated by Jian Gomeshi, the deaths of Catie Miller and Loretta Saunders and the continued discussion about violence against women and consent as a result of the death of Rehtaeh Parsons.

The massacre was and continues to be a wake-up call for each of us: violence against women is a tragic reality. While we hold the memory of the massacre in silent reflection at vigils we also need to speak out and end the silence that obscures this global issue. The voice of women will not be silenced.
