In 2003, Grandmother Josephine Mandamin and the Water Walkers began a 7 years journey to walk around the Great Lakes and up the St. Lawrence Seaway. Each step they walked was a prayers for the sacred Water, for Mother Earth, for the animals, the birds, the insects, the trees and for us, the two leggeds. Together the walks were one prayer for life.

In 2011, the Mother Earth Water Walk brought together four healing salt Waters to converge with the waters of the Great Lakes, Mother Earth's largest freshwater system. They walked simultaneously from the four Directions from the West, Aberdeen, Washington, from the East, Machias, Maine, from the South, Gulfport, Mississippi and from the North, Churchill, Manitoba to converge at Bad River, Wisconsin for healing the waters ceremonies.

These are amazing accomplishments, but we need each and everyone to stand up for the water and protect it as you would your life. Water is life. The Grandmothers stood up, encouraging Anishinabe women to pick up their bundles, their work as women, life givers, to carry the water, the life-giving blood of our Mother, the Earth. Then the Anishinabe men stood up to take on their role, their responsibility to protect the women, carrying the staff, walking side by side with the women who carry the water.

The United Nations proclamation of 22 April 2013 as International Mother Earth Day is an acknowledgement that the Earth and its ecosystems provide its inhabitants with life and sustenance. It also recognizes a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity.

On Mother's Day 2013, this will be our 5th Annual Water Walk to honor our Mother Earth and Sacred Water!! We will walk for Healing and Protection for our Mother Earth and the Sacred Water.

We will meet at 12:00 noon at Point Pleasant Park, Black Rock Beach and have a opening prayer and Water Ceremony and drum Songs. We will gather to begin the Water Walk at 1:00PM sharp to the Mikmaq Gathering site and back to Black Rock Beach. We will then do the ceremony to honor the Sacred Water and make our offerings of thankgiving. We will have a closing Round Dance and picnic potluck feast!!!

Please join us and bring some friends!! This is open to the public. Women are asked to wear a skirt in honor of our Mother Earth!! If you have handdrums, rattles, bring them too!
